The Langford Method

Skills and habits for learning without limits

The Langford Method is designed to develop the fundamental skills and socio-emotional habits that help children engage with learning, stay motivated and learn effectively — without stress and with confidence.

History and evolution

  1. 1980 Development of a method for teaching English to Spanish-speaking adults
  2. 2003 Expansion into early childhood education, fostering the "will to act"
  3. 2008-09 Adaptation for children with ADHD, with active participation from parents
  4. 2009 Presented at the World Congress of Mental Health in Athens
  5. 2011 Endorsement from UNESCO for Latin America and the Caribbean
  6. 2013 Presented in South Africa, earning international recognition
  7. 2015-19 Follow-up study on mental calculation with students in Chile and Peru
  8. 2024 Assessment of skills and habits, confirming the importance of early childhood

Why Does the Langford Method Work?

Stress-free learning

Encourages socio-emotional habits.

Adaptable to different context

Used across diverse social, cultural and economic contexts.

Inclusive

Recognized by UNESCO and effective for children with ADHD, ASD, and other special educational needs.

Self-discipline

Builds consistency and organisation from an early age.

Preparation for life

Develops the cognitive and socio-emotional skills children need in today's world.

Programmes

Programmes designed around how children learn

Our programmes are designed around how children learn. Each activity is tailored to a stage of development, helping children build the skills they need to learn with confidence and without unnecessary limitations.

  • Language and reading comprehension
  • Language learning
  • Mental calculation and mathematics
  • Attention, concentration and memory
  • Self-control
  • Self-discipline
  • Critical thinking

How they are designed

Multisensory

Programmes combine visual, auditory and movement-based activities to engage multiple senses and support learning.

Respect for short-term memory

A maximum of five new items per session. Keeping the number of new items manageable helps reduce cognitive overload and supports sustained learning.

Movement

For young children, music and movement add an active, engaging element to learning and help reinforce new skills.

Music and imagery

4/4 rhythms can encourage relaxation and support the use of imagery, helping children engage with and remember new information without excessive repetition.

Constant feedback

Progressive exercises reinforce learning and give children regular opportunities to recall and apply what they have learned.

Structure: 50 sessions

Each programme consists of 50 ten-minute sessions, designed to support visible progress without overwhelming or frustrating the child.

Key benefits

  • Effective, stress-free learning
  • Development of cognitive and socio-emotional skills
  • Habit formation that supports learning
  • Motivation and interest in learning
  • Supporting children's wellbeing and reducing unnecessary pressure around learning
  • Preparation for life
Sylvia Langford

Sylvia Langford

Psychologist, Author and Creator of the Langford Method

Sylvia Langford has spent more than 40 years studying, developing and applying effective approaches to learning and family wellbeing. she worked with children with ADHD, ASD, learning difficulties and diverse learning needs; she presented her method at international congresses; and today her programmes have benefited more than 88,000 people in Chile, Peru, and other countries.

What sets her apart is not only her track record, but the fact that she never stopped working directly with children, families and schools. That direct experience — including more than 14,000 people seen in her practice and work with 300 schools — is central to the development of the method.
